Historic Dining Gem - Blackfriars Restaurant

Blackfriars restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne holds a special place in our hearts as one of our favorite dining spots. From its rich history to its delectable food, this establishment never fails to impress. One of the standout features of Blackfriars is its early evening set menu, which offers exceptional value for money. Not only does the restaurant boast an impressive wine selection, but it also showcases local beers, allowing patrons to immerse themselves in the flavors of the area.

What truly sets Blackfriars apart is its unique atmosphere within a 13th-century building. As soon as you step inside, you are transported back in time, surrounded by old-world furnishings. The chunky wooden tables, heavy doors, and stone walls contribute to the charm and authenticity of the place. To start our dining experience, we always make a point of visiting the adjoining bar called the Cloister Bar. With its stone walls, leather wingback chairs, and cozy sofas, it provides the perfect ambiance to unwind and enjoy a drink before our meal.

On the day we visited, it happened to be one of the hottest days of the year during lunchtime. Despite the option of outdoor seating with shading umbrellas, we opted for the main restaurant due to the scorching heat. Fortunately, the stone walls, flagged concrete floor, and the gentle breeze flowing through the windows kept the interior pleasantly cool. To top it off, the restaurant was surprisingly quiet as most customers had chosen to dine outside.

Blackfriars prides itself on its seasonal menus that revolve around local produce. Although the menu changes with the seasons, they do maintain some all-year favorites, such as their mouthwatering sticky toffee pudding with banana ice cream. The set menu, in particular, offers a diverse selection and allows diners to experience a range of dishes from the à la carte menu at a very reasonable price.

The waiting staff at Blackfriars are exemplary in their service. Not only are they attentive, but they also engage in friendly conversation, which adds a personal touch to the dining experience. Their knowledge about the dishes and wines is impressive, making the entire meal an informative and enjoyable affair.

Blackfriars restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne is a culinary gem that seamlessly combines history, delicious food, and warm hospitality. Whether you're looking for a romantic evening or a casual gathering with friends, this establishment will leave you satisfied and eager to return. We highly recommend it to anyone seeking a truly memorable dining experience.
